Lecture 7: Letters
8.10.2020

Today we learn about understanding letterforms. The uppercase letterforms suggest symmetry, but the truth is that, it is not symmetrical. In serif type, the upper letters is not symmetrical, one part of the letter have more weight than the other. For example the two different stroke weights of Baskerville, each bracket connecting the serif to the stem has unique arc.

INSTRUCTIONS

Project 2 : Font Design
06.10.2020(Week 7)

For the second project, We are instructed to design our own typeface of the following letters and symbols in the brackets ( a i m e p y t g d o b ! , . ). We have to first choose a typeface to dissect, to learn and analyze the anatomy of the letters before we start designing a font. I chose OCR A Extended as the reference font.

After doing the analysis, we were given 1 hour in class to come up with at least 5 font designs.

This is the progression using Indesign

Feedback 13/10/2020

Mr Vinod said I need to make sure that I design the font from O first, and the following fonts need to be the same width as the font O. Mr Vinod also said I need to change the letter P and B.

Feedback 20/10/2020
Today, Mr Vinod and Mr Sam let me remake all of the typefaces, and they make a good example for me to follow and update my work, now I know the letter m should be the widest letter in the alphabet, and I need to start my work by design the letter O first. Because many other letters are kind similar or refer to it.

Reflections

Experience
- It was fun to make the font design using Adobe Illustrator. Mr Sam taught me how to use line to make font.

Observation
- When I decide to make the font, I want it looks technical and from future, so I use OCR as the reference typeface.

Findings
- I think my final poster is great and have no problem on it. It looks like the message from the future.

Further Reading

This week I've read Typography References. I chose the part of Typographic Principles by Jason Tselentis to read.  I knew that designing with type is as much a science as an art, requiring a delicate balance between all items in the format to deliver appropriate and functional solutions. Designers who rely “purely on instinct” often have the benefit of years of experience, and thanks to their training, can call on formal qualities and aesthetic conditions that have worked well for them in the past. Contrasts (230) in size, shape, tone, placement, and color all factor into how elements placed in the format look.
